Literally meaning "reverse-edged sword," the sakabatou is just that. Instead of the blade being on the curved edged, the blade is actually where the blunt edge would be, with the blunt edge being on the curve. Thus, when used just like any normal katana, the sakabatou can't cut or kill: the perfect weapon for Kenshin since his oath to never kill again. Reverse blade katana, also known as sakabato is a katana with the sharp edge inside of the curve, rather than on the outside, which is usually unsharpened. This type of sword actually predates the typical katana, as at that time a shield was often used in combat, and the reverse blade swords were more easily wielded in one hand. A concave (reverse) blade is, as mentioned, easier to wield in one hand, and cuts through the air slightly better than a convex blade (?standard? katana) enabling the wielder to make faster cuts.
